Engine Swap: 2E to 4E or 5E (easiest way)
In order to proper swap an engine to a car, you will need -of course- an engine, the right gearbox and all the stuff related to the new engine. These can be the wiring, ECU, mounts etc.
Well, not in our case. If your Corolla (or Starlet, in this occasion) has the 2E-E engine and you simply want something quite newer to run or... play with (on a budget), keep reading.
***Important note, in order to follow that guide, you MUST have a car with the EFI-version engine. I am not responsible for failures/damages, ask your mechanic BEFORE any work on your car.***
What you need:
- Engine (4/5E)
- Distributor/Spark Cables (4/5E)
- Fuel Injectors (4/5E)
- Exhaust Manifold 4/5E)
- Intake Manifold (4/5E)
- Throttle Body and TPS (2E)
- Lambda Sensor with 1 cable (universal or from any car that fits)
- Thermostat Housing with ALL sensors (2E)
What can be used on both engines:
- All sensors (MAP, oil, coolant etc)
- Engine Mounts
- Gearbox/Shafts
- Starter
- Water Pump
- Alternator
- Radiator/Hoses
***NOTES***
- Idle motor from the newer engine (if it has), cannot be used. This is why you need the 2E throttle body, as you can manually adjust the idle with a screwdriver.
- The fifth injector on the 2E intake, can not be used. You just leave the connector unplugged, no check engine light.
- You must weld a female fiiting for the lambda sensor, if the exhaust manifold does not have one.
- All sensors are plug and play from the old engine, to the new one.
- You can either use the stock air filter box, or an aftermarket air intake filter. I went for the second option, using a BMC CDA carbon air barrel.
- In the case of 2E to 5E, the gearbox of the first has a shorter gear ratio, compared to the second. As you understand you lose high speed, but you gain acceleration. Also, if you often travel with your car, keep in mind that on 5th gear and 3000rpm, your speed is 93+- km (195/50 R15 wheels, GPS calculated).
- You need the 2E thermostat housing, as in the case of 2E to 5E, some sensors were missing.
- BONUS: The turbo exhaust manifold, or the G6 intake manifold (fron the 1300cc ones) can be fitted without ANY customisation, on a 5E engine.
