Short Shifter DIY (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 5 parts)
You can shorten the gear selector dinstance on an AE92/EE90 Corolla easily, without cutting/trimming the OEM selector. The solution is quite simple, as you have to use an aftermarket part with inital fitting on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5. It is almost direct fit and improves a lot the feeling, while shifting gears.
Back on the days I personally installed mine, I used an EPMAN short shifter kit from eBay (cheap enough to give it a try, comparing to the TRD kit for the Rolla), and also some extra bolts/spacers.
The fitting process is simple:
- Remove the knob/console to unveil the selector.
- Remove the bolts that hold the selector.
- Mark and remove carefully the shifting cables.
- Remove the shifting stick from the selector by unscrewing the 3 bolts on top.
- Remove and transfer to the new stick, the two plastic joints from the cables' fittings.
- Use grease to fit the new stick on the selector. You may need to fine the selector's joint, in order to fit the stick easily/not get stuck while changing gears.
- As the distance of the cables changes, the body of the selector needs to be cut at some points. You can see on the pictures where mine was cut, it is preffered to do a test fit on the car's body before cutting.
- Grease the cable fittings and install them on the correct place.
- Re-install the selector on the body. The original bolts can't be used again, as the height of the stick changed. New bolts and spacers are needed, to perfect fit again.
- Re-install the console and knob to finish.
NOTES:
- After installing the short shifter, the position returng was lost. I'm about some solutions I'd like to try, in order to fix it. Of course the guide will be updated, if the problem is solved.
- The OEM knob needs adapter, in order to be fitted on the new stick. The OEM shift boot also, can't be installed without trimming.
- As the shifting distance changes, IT IS NECESSARY to get used to the new shifter.
